Hofferberth Named High School Chemistry Teacher of the Year
Chemistry teacher Mrs. Kristin Hofferberth of Mount Vernon High School has been named the High
School Chemistry Teacher of the Year by the Columbus Section of the American Chemical Society. Mrs
Hofferberth will be recognized for this award at the Columbus Section's May meeting. Mrs. Hofferberth and her school will also receive a cash award for this prestigious honor.
Mrs. Hofferberth has been a chemistry teacher for seven years including the past four years at Mount
Vernon High School. She has also been a laboratory instructor for six years at Kenyon College in
Gambier, Ohio. Throughout her teaching career, Mrs. Hofferberth has taught a variety of chemistry and physics courses.
Mrs. Hofferberth graduated Summa Cum Laude from The Ohio State University with her undergraduate
degree in chemistry and subsequently earned her master’s degree in secondary science education from OSU. Mrs. Hofferberth is a member of the American Chemical Society and the American Association of Chemistry Teachers. In the last five years she has participated in a variety of professional development
courses at Miami University, Ohio Northern University, Kenyon College, and Mount Vernon Nazarene University.
Mrs. Hofferberth’s colleagues and administrators describe her as a teacher who constantly pursues new
instructional approaches to help her students learn chemistry. In addition to teaching chemistry, Mrs.
Hofferberth serves as the advisor to her school’s National Honor Society. She has also participated
multiple times in the Knox County “Girls in Science Day” event.
Mrs. Hofferberth has been described as a passionate teacher at her school who teaches with boundless
enthusiasm for science. She consistently goes above and beyond the normal teaching day to meet the
needs of her students.
Each year since 1965, the Columbus Section of the American Chemical Society has awarded the High
School Chemistry Teacher of the Year Award to a chemistry teacher in Central Ohio.
