Columbia Elementary Library

Welcome to Columbia's Library!

My name is Wendi Hord and I am the library aide here at Columbia. I have both a bachelor's and master's degree in Early Childhood Education from The Ohio State University. I live just outside of Mount Vernon with my husband, Kevin, and our two children, Kiley and Brice. When I am not in the library, I enjoy making fun memories with my family, playing board games, and reading!

The Columbia library is a safe space where each and every student can discover their interests and passions while gaining a lifelong love of reading and thirst for knowledge. Our time together is spent sharing in the joy of read alouds, playing interactive games and songs, learning essential library/literacy skills, and creating things using hands-on stations. I also teach technology classes where we learn age appropriate ways to use technology to enhance our learning and lives.

"The simplest way to make sure that we raise literate children is to teach them to read, and to show them that reading is a pleasurable activity. And that means, at its simplest, finding books that they enjoy, giving them access to those books, and letting them read them." -Neil Gaiman

What to Expect in Library

Just Right Books

How do you know if a book is "just right" for you?

1) Pick up a book you find interesting!
2) Open it up.
3) Try reading the first page. Put a finger up for each word you cannot read, if you have five fingers up it is probably too hard and you should try a different book.
4) Read a page or two more. Can you read it smoothly? Do you understand what is going on? If yes, you found a "just right" book. Enjoy! If no, try a different one.
