Ohio law requires that third graders attain a promotional score of 44 on the reading portion of the Ohio Third Grade English Language Arts (ELA) assessment. This assessment is administered online twice a year to all third graders, in the fall and in the spring. MVCSD third graders will be taking the spring administration of this test this month.
The Ohio Department of Education has identified several alternative tests that districts may elect to give their third graders, as well. MVCSD administers the Terra Nova Reading Test, a paper and pencil assessment, to students who did not pass the fall administration of the third grade ELA. We score the Terra Nova locally and so have immediate results.
Even though the state ELA test is being administered in March-April, we will not receive the results until June 15. Consequently, in May, we will administer a second form of the Terra Nova to those students who did not reach the promotional score on our first administration. In June, when we have received the results of the ELA assessment, we will contact parents of any student who still has not met the requirement on any of the tests given, so that we can provide summer tutoring and a third administration of the state ELA in July.
